Racing software

Postby Dreadnought » February 22nd, 2010, 1:05 pm

The racing results software I have written now copes with handicaps using the SCHRS as well as Portsmouth Yardstick if required.

I have re-entered the results for the 2009 regatta races and they seem to come out in roughly the same order as before.

I think I have more or less finished the software for racing results. Anybody with access to the admin section can now add, edit and delete series and do the same for sailors in the database.

The big test will come in three weeks time but I am quietly confident it is going to work.

If any other sailing clubs are interested in the software please give me a call on 01983 721264.

I have updated the race series page so it shows the latest races: http://www.shanklinsailingclub.com/series.php (as long as we remember to put a date on).

There is also a new RSS feed for the racing results: http://www.shanklinsailingclub.com/race-results.xml .

Last year.

However there is a bug in the RSS feed - it is currently showing series results, not race results.

In expectation of a squeaky tight finish in the Tuesday Afternoon Series I have updated the racing results software to count back the best two discards and order results accordingly.

Positions will be defined by number of points after all discards, number of points after one less discard, number of points after 2 less discards.

If that doesn't separate Geoff and Keith then they will have to have a "who can piss the highest" competition to decide the winner.

I have added a statistics facility to the race results software. Just click in your name in the race pages and you can see some details such as number of wins and average points.

Discarded points are now scored through in a different colour to the number. I did this because it wasn't clear whether 4s were discarded or not.

As Shanklin Sailing Club is not very competitive, I thought I would add something to the site to give people more incentive.

I have made a table of average scores for the last two years' results. This is slightly different from the averages on individuals' pages as this shows races started instead of completed.

As soon as the first results of 2011 go on the site it will show 2010 and 2011.

Some of the more eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed the Pursuit results for 2011 were upset by Keith and John getting average points and not having a total to average. This bug has now been fixed and Sean has now returned to the top of the table.

Tie breaks

I have tweaked the racing software to deal with tie breaks.

Race series are now decided by the following criteria.

Lowest number of series points after discards are removed.
Number of firsts.
Number of seconds.
Number of thirds.
Lowest number of series points counting the best discard.
Lowest number of series points counting the two best discards.
Lowest number of series points counting all discarded points.
Position in last race in series.

Firsts, seconds, thirds and last result are regardless of whether they are discarded or not.

Hope that is OK with the VC.

The changes only show if I update a series.

Two changes that occur due to this system are Mark Pritchard is third in the Bang and Go Back series rather than joint third with myself, and Simon Giles no longer shares the 2010 Ventnor Race with Erling Holmberg but wins outright.
