Sprit/Dart 15 Sail

I want to purchase a new Sprint/Dart 15 sail, but can’t afford one.

I have found out that SS Marine/Speedy Sports do a Club/Dart 15 sail at the cost of £385 + Vat more affordable exactly the same measurements but for Club use only.

The sails would have to be accepted by the Shanklin Sailing Club committee, and would not be allowed for Association events.
Club racing only.

These would save your class legal racing sail.

Please let me know if you think this is a Good Idea :D or a Bad Idea  .

It should be fine as long as they are the same size, the same cut and the same material.

I am being sent a main and jib to play with.
Should have it by Thursday.

I too would be very keen to buy one of these.

The price of the class-legal one is outrageous. Hopefully the other members / committee will be cool with this. Not that it will make an ounce of difference to my crap sailing, but will make the boat look better ... ;)

Sounds very sensible. Keep the costs to a level all can enjoy.

Brilliant suggestion Chris. I agree with all of the above. The price of the class legal sail is almost double. It is totally disproportionate to the value of the boat. I need a new one and don't want to pay that much. Committee support would be very much appreciated by all members.

Chris, as I too would like a new sail I think this is a good idea.

I think it is great. Probably don't need one at the moment but happy to test it as a comparitor to an official nearly new one.

It was compared to Liam's new sail today. I am hoping that it will now go to committee for the OK as I am in need of a new sail as mine needs more and more attention. I am keeping Graham Caws in business at the moment. :x

One of the great things about the Dart / Sprint 15’s is that they’re a far cry from ‘cheque book sailing’. A well maintained boat of any age can be very competitive and anyone can be racing for a very small cash outlay. The one item that can obviously make a difference is the sail. The price of the new class-legal sail is ridiculous and a gross abuse of their monopoly …in my humble opinion. 8-)

These sails are basically half the price and therefore keeps the racing open to all. Chris really struggled last night using his ancient sail, which must have been terribly frustrating. Is this not something that could be easily agreed between the committee in the next few days ? There does not appear to be anyone against the idea so far. SSC has proven to be pretty relaxed and pro-active ….. unlike every other club I’ve belong to – it’s so refreshing :)

I would support this too.

1) It allows people with old sails to upgrade for a reasonable cost.
2) It allows the keen racers to save their class legal sails for events.

I probably don't need one at the moment, but if lots of people are buying and one or two more are needed to negotiate a deal with speedy sports I'd probably get one.

I think that we should allow any that wish to use the 'non official' sails to do so for club sailing.
I will be getting one.

The mention yesterday of large single numbers for these sails starting from 01, etc is also a great idea. It will prevent anyone thinking of using them at class events. It'll also make it easier for spotting whose who from the race box, as clearly all using these will be shooting over the start line at 100kph :)

No need to mess about changing sail numbers, they don't have the Sprint 15, Dart 15 or Spark emblems.

The committee may need to agree a type of batten to be used too (Either cheap ones or standard ones so you don't need two sets!) as Having different ones could make quite a difference.

Personally I hadn't even thought of the battens as I would just use the battens from the sail that I am replacing or preserving.

I think the thing with the fibre foam battens is they are supposed to be harder wearing but the same same stiffness as the originals.

They are also cheaper due to the differing inflation rates of Northamptonshire and Cornwall.

Re battens: therefore maybe the committee needs to approve either standard or fibre foam battens to be used.

I would say stick with the fibrefoam battens as that is what we all have, along with the batten ends.

Well done all.
I have put 01 in Red on my sail.
Steve has 2 in stock at the moment, First come First Served.
The price on the Speedy Sports web site includes postage.

Have the jib here that came with the main if anyone wants to try it.

I am sure that Graham Caws will fit windows in the sails.

Contrary to the conversation at the club on keeping the cost down by just starting from 1, I have taken mine off to keep Liam and the Club happy.
You had better tell Erling he needs all 8 as he wanted me to get just 2 X 7's.

If I can't get the numbers tomorrow can I sail without one or 6 in my case.

Why

Re: Sprit/Dart 15 Sail

by Dreadnought
Well for starters, Sue has learnt all our numbers and doesn't want to have to relearn them. And I don't want to put in a new set of numbers into the scoring system depending on which sail people choose to use.

But most of all, I think we all want to know who we are racing against and learning two sets of numbers makes that much harder.

Message from Steve Sawford.
Pass the word if people want sails they can order on speedysports but request invoice not pay at checkout.
Then when the stock comes in I'll contact for payment.
No obligation to buy but I need numbers to commit my order.
