Feel free to post any comments here. Sailing questions, requests, comments, interesting (sailing related!) links.

This is also where I will post by Thursday evening if we have to cancel Cadet night for any reason.

Cadet Night 11th May 2012

Postby simongiles » May 14th, 2012, 4:08 pm

Hopefully everyone had a good time, thankfully a little warmer than last week.

Top Tips from this week:

1) Sailing towards the wind and against the tide is hard work. You will need the mainsheet in TIGHT. Don't be afraid to lean out hard to keep the boat flat.

2) Launching in waves - try and hit them head on and at full speed, don't worry about getting the rudder or centreboard fully down until you are through them.

3) Returning to the shore - uncleat the rudder rope and take the centreboard out completely when you are about 50metres from the beach. You can still sail without a centreboard. If the boat turns sideways to the waves, fall out on the sea side.

Cadet Night 25th May

Postby simongiles » May 28th, 2012, 9:02 am

What did we learn ?

1) Big waves don't necessarily mean lots of wind !

2) Capsizing is fun!

3) Pushing your big sister overboard is also fun !

On a serious note - Launching - always hold the boat at the bow, with the bow facing into the waves - this means if a big wave does hit, the boat will be pushed away from you and not into you.
In flat water it also means the sails will flap and the boat will point into the wind and not try and sail off before your ready. :ugeek:

Cadet Night 1st June

Postby simongiles » May 28th, 2012, 9:23 am

Cadets Friday 1st June is Cancelled.

Instead we are going to meet on Saturday Lunchtime for a Swallows and Amazons style trip to Luccombe and picnic lunch. 8-)

Bring a packed lunch in a waterproof container. We will meet at about 11.30am with a view to launching before 12.30pm.

If the weather is unfavourable we will simply have a fun sail in the bay.

Even though Windguru is giving 30knots and 12ft waves - What could possibly go wrong ! :o

Assuming Windguru is wrong this Friday we will start at 4pm - bring something to BBQ and hopefully the parents will cook it while we are on the water.

In case any of our budding cadets are interested, here is a Taz that could be quite cheap on ebay

Note that some old ones had a gaff Optimist type rig that would be less desirable so I suggest that is checked if you are interested. Also this appears to be missing a trolley. Sean

Cadet Night 15th June

Postby simongiles » June 16th, 2012, 9:38 am

What did we learn ?

Well mainly we can all cope with full rigs in a force 4 wind !

That in itself is great and means we can have the confidence to push things a little further in future sessions.

Some advance notices - I am planning on moving Cadet Night 29th June to the Saturday again as the tides are right for attempting another picnic trip to Luccombe.

We will start to learn a bit about racing - anyone interested I can strongly recommend the Gurnard Junior Regatta as a good fun event:http://www.gurnardsc.org.uk/gurnard-junior-regatta/

Speak to me if you think you might like to go.

Some homework for this week - try and find out how a sailing race starts, what horns you might hear and what flags you might see. If you like - post the answer on this forum.

Cadet Night 29th June

Postby simongiles » June 25th, 2012, 9:48 pm

The Friday night cadets is cancelled. Instead we will be meeting at 11am on Sat 30th and attempting another picnic trip to Luccombe. The weather is looking a bit kinder and it should be spectacular with the Round the Island race going past.

See you Saturday

Email me any queries.

Cadet Race 5

Postby simongiles » July 9th, 2012, 9:32 pm

Here is a very short section of clips from the race last weekend. They mainly came about as Jane thought she was taking photos but the camera was set to video :?:

What is impressive is the cadets get a better start than most of the Cats !

Cadet Night 27th July

Postby simongiles » July 22nd, 2012, 8:31 am

Is Cancelled.

Very sorry but myself, Sean and other Simon are all out of the country with our families.

I think the Friday after is also looking doubtful, but I will post nearer the time.

If you get withdrawl symptoms you can still pleasure sail on Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings if there is a safety boat to keep an eye out for you.

Cadet Night 3rd August

Postby simongiles » July 30th, 2012, 9:13 am

I'm afraid cadets on Friday 3rd August is also cancelled. It is unfortunate that we are all on holiday at the same time but C'est la vie - can you tell I've been in France.

At this stage I'm not aware of any other sessions we wil need to cancel this year.

It was nice to see all the Pico's out pleasure sailing this Sunday.

A future date for your diary is the Shanklin Sailing club regatta on Thursday 9th August. There will be two handicap races in the afternoon followed by a barbecue. Please let me know if you would like to reserve a Pico for it.

Pico Races with the Royal Vic

Postby simongiles » August 22nd, 2012, 9:50 pm

The Royal Vic have invited us over to do some Pico Novice races with them. The plan is to do some fun races on two Saturdays in September. One set to be done at the Royal Vic and the other at Shanklin. We are looking at small numbers, perhaps 4 boats from each club. Can you let me know if you are interested and which Saturdays you are free.

First event is set for this Saturday 1st September at 10am. Hopefully we can get some practice in on Cadet Night this Friday.

It would be nice to take 4 boats sailed 2up - so spread the word and if anyone is interested in coming please let me know ASAP.

Congratulations to our (unofficial) champions of the Royal Vic regatta.

In case anyone is interested, there is potentially a cheap Topper Taz available on Ebay - in case anyone feels up to challenging Henry's world dominance http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251149589766&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123#ht_512wt_1397

End of Cadet Nights for 2012

Postby simongiles » September 19th, 2012, 4:02 pm

Due to our various work commitments and the fact that it is getting a bit dark now - there will be no Cadet night this Friday (21st September) and in fact no further Cadet nights this year.

I hope you have all had a good time and look forward to seeing you at Cadet Nights in 2013.

Keep an eye on the website for news and spend the winter harassing your parents to buy you your own boat - with the numbers coming to cadet nights increasing 4 club boats won't go far !
